A dental emergency is any oral health problem or injury that requires urgent treatment. This includes signs of infection, severe tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, a fractured tooth, uncontrollable bleeding, lacerations to the face or the inside of the mouth, and other oral injuries.
Dental emergencies are treated with great urgency so we will always try to accommodate you as soon as possible. Emergency appointments prevent complications from severe damage or oral health problems and we can provide you with relief so you don’t have to suffer while you wait for future appointments. If you are experiencing a dental emergency, please call our office at (775) 686-6029.
You should remain calm and contact us right away. While we leave some room in our schedule each day to accommodate dental emergencies to the best of our ability, we’ll be able to accommodate you better if we know we should be expecting you.
Give us a ring to let us know you’re experiencing a dental emergency and let us know what all of your symptoms are and any other relevant details. Dr. Dean will provide you with instructions if she needs you to bring anything with you to the appointment.
If you have sustained an injury, you should check to see if you are bleeding. Bleeding should be controlled with the use of damp gauze. Bite down on the gauze for about 30 minutes to stop the bleeding. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to remove tooth fragments, bacteria, and other debris from the mouth.
This cleans any wounds and reduces swelling. If you are experiencing swelling, use a cold pack and keep your head elevated. Anti-inflammatory pain medication can be used for pain relief until you get here. Don’t delay treatment and try to treat your symptoms yourself. Emergency dental problems will only get worse the longer you wait.
Did you lose or break a dental filling? If so, our Reno dentist offers regular and emergency tooth-colored fillings or temporary fillings depending on the condition of your oral health. We’ll assess the condition of your tooth and determine the best course of treatment for your lost or broken filling.
If you have a broken, damaged, or decayed tooth, we may need to protect it with a dental crown. Crowns can hold broken teeth together to prevent the need for extraction and provide strength and durability to vulnerable teeth at high risk of becoming damaged from chewing forces.
If you have signs of an infection such as discoloration, tooth sensitivity, pain, swelling, and an abscess, you need to contact us right away so we can perform the first stage of a root canal. During your appointment, we will relieve your pain and perform a pulpectomy to remove the infected pulp and root from your tooth. The tooth will also need to be cleaned and filled but this may be performed in separate appointments.
If your tooth is not salvageable because it has broken off at the gum line, is severely fractured, or has advanced tooth decay, an extraction is used as a last resort. Extractions prevent infections from spreading to the other teeth and traveling through your bloodstream. If the tooth can’t be saved, we can remove it and replace it.
With a bright and sparkling grin, you can be confident in your smile and your self. We wouldn’t blame you if you started to show off your pearly whites to everyone you see!
Even with the best dental hygiene, every smile is susceptible to staining from coffee, tea, and soda. Take Years off your grin with teeth whitening.
Compared to more involved cosmetic procedures, teeth whitening offers dramatic results without breaking the bank, giving you yet another reason to smile.
